We asked NAO — an artist known for animals and flowers —
for two still lifes, of all things…

And yet,
Yet her youthful take on records, and that life-filled brushwork,
turned ordinary vinyl discs into something with infinite possibility.

I’ll stay at my day job a little longer, but
I’m working hard toward opening the record bar so these pieces can finally be seen!

Thank you so much for the kind words and the commission.
When the request came in I thought,“A r-record?! I’ve never painted one!”came to be.
I’m not from the vinyl generation, and it wasn’t a motif I’d expected.

As a child I wanted to be a vet or a florist.
Because I loved those things I had mostly painted animals and flowers.
Lately there are more Mt. Fujis and dragon gods, but…

I saw records in CD shops until about junior high. You don’t see them much now, do you? Do kids born today even know the word “record”?

To paint this work
I hadn’t really lived with records, so I went to a record café.
I even took home vinyl no one was playing anymore, and found my way into the work.

Records are rare now, and that makes them precious.
Commissioned art is when you’re asked for a motif you wouldn’t choose yourself.
I finished it with a healthy stretch of nerves.
It’s left my hands, but I’m still quietly proud of it.

Men, by the way, have been especially kind about it.
